How to Tell If a Job is Really a Scam

How to Tell If a Job is Really a ScamHow to Tell If a Job is Really a ScamSometimes, it seems that there are as many scams as legitimate job openings on the job boards. Toby Dayton, President, and CEO of JobDig explains, There is just no question that job boards as a whole can be, if they are leid diligent in managing the risk for consumers, a magnet for scams, rip-offs, and identity theft. There are hundreds of well-documented techniques and examples that people should be careful to look for. Before you apply for a job, review warning signs to help you determine if a job is a scam. If youre not sure, take the time to research the company to make sure the job is legitimate. Here are ways to tell if a job is a scam. Research the Job and the Company Visit the companys website and if they dont have one or it doesnt fit with how they describe the company, consider that a red flag. How professional is it? Is there contact information? Are jobs and career information posted on the site ? Use Google Use Google to research the company. Search by the company personenname (if the company wont give you a name, dont bother applying) to see what information you can find. Take it one step further and search by company name scam to see if you can find information about reported scams. The Job Details If it isnt listed in the job posting, try to find out if theres a salary or if youre paid on commission. Ask how much youre paid, how often are you paid, and how you are paid. If the company doesnt pay an hourly rate or a salary, carefully investigate the details. Check Scam Lists Check with organizations like the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission to see if the company has been reported as a scammer. Do Not Pay Do not pay money - for anything. Legitimate employers dont charge to hire you. Dont send money for work at home directories, advice on getting hired, company information or for anything else related to a job. Check the Companys R eferences References work both ways. You are as entitled to check a companys references as they are to check you out. Ask for references if youre not sure if the company is legitimate. Request a list of other employees or contractors. Then, contact the references to ask how this is working out. If the company isnt willing to provide references (names, email addresses, and phone numbers), do not consider the opportunity. Forget Getting Rich Quick Avoid listings that guarantee you wealth, financial success, or that will help you get rich fast. Stay clear of listings that offer you high income for part-time hours. They will do none of the above. Be Careful If it sounds too good to be true, you can be sure it is. Also, read any offers you get very carefully. One candidate for employment got a very detailed job offer from an employer. The only problem was that she hadnt applied for the job and buried deep within the lines was a request for her bank account information so that th e employer could pay her. It was a scam, of course, but with some of the well-written ones, it can be hard to tell.

Survey Heres how people really feel about robots in the workplace

Survey Here's how people really feel about robots in the workplace Survey Here's how people really feel about robots in the workplace Global professional services firm Genpact recently released the latest in a three-part series of research reports, showing that  among U.S. workers 13% would be “very comfortable” and 27% would be “fairly comfortable” having a position where they worked with or among robots.Genpact partnered with  research firm YouGov to survey more than 5,000 people from the UK, US, and Australia for the research. Of all the respondents, 54% were employees (with part-time hours at a minimum), but the rest were either not working, in school, or retired. Here are just some of the findings. Here’s how people think AI could help at workSome 38% of workers agree or strongly agree that AI threatens the positions they currently have. But the results show that people think this new technology could be a helpful in specific ways.Among the top advantages of AI, “saves time” was the most popular choice with 42% of those 18-34 and 29% of those 55+ picking this option. The next most popular choice was that it cuts staff costs, with 38% of those 18-34 and 36% of those 55+ selecting this one.“Makes the company more competitive in its industry” was among the other benefits, with 21% of those 18-34 picking this and 22% in the 55+ crowd doing so.Here’s what people think they’ll need to be good atThe top skill workers think they’ll need to do well in their careers is “the ability to adapt to change,” at 50%.While “critical thinking and problem solving skills” came in second place at 44%, it was ahead of “technical skills (e.g. coding, statistics, applied math)” at 39%, among others. The report also highlighted the idea that according to the first study of senior executives, just 25% strongly think their employer gives workers “the skills they need to take advantage of AI.”“Many workers expect to be comfortable working alongside AI within the next three years, but they worry that their employers aren’t going to retrain them to make the most of the technolog y,” the research says.Sanjay Srivastava, chief digital officer at Genpact, commented on the survey in a statement.“Artificial intelligence brings a seismic shift in the future of work â€" making some roles obsolete and enhancing others, while at the same time, creating new jobs, and even spawning new professions. Our research shows that employees want and need additional skills to embrace these opportunities â€" and companies must respond. Businesses that will succeed in this new world will be those that ramp up fast to invest in the right AI tools and upskill their workforce,” he said. Here’s how young people can get ready for AIWith nine-in-ten respondents agreeing that it will be necessary for younger generations to equip themselves with “new skills to compete in a workplace shaped by AI,” the report went into detail about the top ways people think they can do so.The most popular response was to increase “specialized job training on human-machine interactions,” at 45%. This was followed by “complete more relevant primary/secondary education in subjects that will prepare them for the future workforce” at 43%.

Ursula Burns From Engineer to CEO

Ursula Burns From Engineer to CEO Ursula Burns From Engineer to CEO My entire existence, my business personality, my practices at work how I lead, manage, and interact the foundation of it all is my engineering education, says Ursula Burns, the CEO and chairman of Xerox Corporation. I moved from engineering to business but the difference is not a difference at all. The synergy between the two is amazing, adds Burns, who joined Xerox in 1980 as a mechanical engineering summer intern. The rest is history. After leading several business teams including the companys color business and office network printing business from 1992 to 2000, Burns was named senior vice president of corporate strategic services, a position that put her in charge of the companys manufacturing and supply chain operations. She was named president in 2007 and chief executive officer in 2009, becoming the first African-American woman to lead a Fortune 500 company. In her first five years as CEO, she transformed Xerox into a thriving international services provider and made it profitable. Born and raised on the lower East side of Manhattan in a poor neighborhood, Burns credits her mother, a single mom, for providing her the best education that shaped her career. My mother believed that education is the solution to all problems. Not knowing which career path to pick due to lack of guidance, Burns pursued her love for math and lucked into mechanical engineering. She earned a BS in mechanical engineering from Polytechnic Institute of NYU and a MS in mechanical engineering from Columbia University. One of the things she is now passionate about is to get more organized introduction into engineering. The idea that you have to feel your way in the dark to find out that this is a career that offers amazing opportunities for yourself and also for the society is not useful, she says. I lucked into it with and amazing mother and some basic education but I dont want it to be luck anymore. I would like the options to be presented to people in a more organized way so they can chose. Ursula Burns at the 2014 Honors Assembly. Burns is advancing STEM by actively supporting a number of community, educational, and nonprofit organizations, including FIRST, the National Academy Foundation, MIT, and the U.S. Olympic Committee. She is a founding board director of Change the Equation, which focuses on improving the U.S. education system in STEM, and also leading the White House national program on STEM. She was recently awarded ASMEs Kate Gleason Award that recognizes a female engineer who has had a lifetime of achievement in the engineering profession. ASME.org caught up with Burns at the 2014 Honors Assembly for her views about STEM education, women in science, and leadership. Were there things you had to learn or unlearn to go beyond your technical training? Many things I had to learn through life to be a leader of a large corporation. One of the most interesting was how to deal with people who are not engineers. Engineers have a characteristic of having an organized thought and approach to a project thats process based. This idea that most problems can be solved with smart people and hard work. Those sets of attributes are actually not native to all disciplines. So you do have to learn how to include other disciplines into the problem-solving process and into the leadership process. We have to stop looking at the transition from engineering to business as an odd occurrence. If you are a successful engineer, you can become a successful contributor in business, academia, etc. The roads dont part, they come together more naturally. I never thought of them as different. Was there a particular project or achievement that you are particularly proud of? There are many projects as I spent the first 15 years of my career doing engineering in a lab. One of the first projects that I worked on was the mechanics and material science of high-speed rotating glass discs. At our company we had to work on a way to replace thin aluminum discs with glass, which would eliminate a step in etching. I worked with my lab partner for almost four years to figure out a way to mount this to make it work and we did it. We were able to accomplish it and that was the first project I worked on and it was foundational as it taught me how to stick with one thing for a long time. It also gave me a big feeling of accomplishment as it worked and was applied to a product we had in the field. Some of my biggest accomplishments have nothing to do with lab work, but solving a customer problem, transforming the business model of a company, and bringing people together so they can work on it. This discipline and idea that getting good minds together of all different t ypes and from all different backgrounds to attack a problem is something that engineers are unbelievably good at. What inspired you to pursue mechanical engineering as a career? My mother spent a lot of time and the little money she had in making sure we had the best education. For us at that time it was going to a catholic school in the poor neighborhood we lived in. It was the best school but it didnt have a broad education and was primarily reading, writing, and basic arithmetic, and a lot of discipline. Even though I didnt have any advanced courses, I was pretty good at math. When it came time for me to go to college, my guidance counselor told me I could be a teacher, a nun, or a nurse. With my mothers pushing, I decided to do some research on my own to find out what people who like math can do for a living. At that time, the number one career for people who had training in math was to become a chemical engineer. I decided to be a chemical engineer but after my first semester I changed to mechanical engineering. It put together a lot of practical things, math and physics, and I loved it. The long and short of it is that I lucked into mechanical enginee ring. How do we involve kids and keep them involved in STEM? I call it celebrating and inspecting what we expect. We should celebrate the breadth of contributions that engineers can make and do make to the society. We celebrate sports people, politicians, actors and actresses, then why not engineers? One of the way we can make STEM more exciting and accessible is to make it more celebrated in a natural way. We also have to fundamentally change the educational structure in the U.S. and around the world. First, to get better educators, particularly in primary and middle schools. Second, we need to get education thats more up to speed with technology and interests of kids today. Third, we absolutely must have parents or adults who can open up options for kids. The idea that you dont know what an engineer does and the idea that there is nobody to push you on that path is not a good idea. What advice would you give to other women looking to step into leadership roles but are struggling to balance their work and life? I think its a fools folly to think we can actually balance in any short period of time the many things that are on our plate. I think about balance not in a day, week, or a month, but over a lifetime. I think we have to slow down, particularly women who have been taught to overachieve in every single endeavor that they enter. Achieving women believe they have to be outstanding every single day at being a parent, spouse, and contributor in your work environment. If you are trying to do that, you are going to crash and burn and very likely not be outstanding at any of it. It is literally on average over time, have you been able to figure it out. We have this kind of strange view thats not realistic about how we should parent, take care of ourselves, or partner to our spouses. We have to define that for ourselves and not let society do it for us and make sure we take a long view, not a short view. Also, balance is not just for women, its for men as well. Listen to the audio interview in the Podcast: Ursula Burns on Struggle and Success For Further Discussion I think about balance not in a day, week, or a month, but over a lifetime.Ursula Burns, CEO and chairman, Xerox Corporation

Its OK if You Consider Your Job Temporary - The Muse

Its OK if You Consider Your Job Temporary - The Muse Its OK if You Consider Your Job Temporary I have a friend who's been job searching for the past year and a half. Passively job searching, that is. See, she doesn’t love her current role. But, as she’s told me multiple times, there are benefits to sticking around. She has health insurance, she likes her co-workers, and it looks good on her resume to have a few years at a good company. Now, I work in the career space, so I spend most of my days telling people that they should love the work they do. And I truly believe this- after all, we spend so much time at work that we deserve to enjoy and feel fulfilled by it (at least most of the time). Plus, as writer Kat Boogaard wisely points out, while it’s OK to like your job because it pays well, “life’s way too short to put up with misery for the sake of piles of cash.” But there’s a whole range of experiences between a nightmare job and your ultimate gig. I’m also aware of the value our jobs can and should realistically provide us- and that those values change over time, in different roles. So here’s the truth: Every job you have doesn’t have to be your dream job. It can, simply put, just be a temporary stepping stone to greater things. Take my friend as an example. While I’m tempted to shake her and say, “Why keep doing this to yourself when you could be so much happier elsewhere?” I also think she makes a good point. She’s still figuring out what she wants in her career, and for now, her job provides her with everything she needs to do just that- financial security, opportunities to grow and meet new people, and experience at a successful company. Here’s another example: Maybe you know exactly what your dream job is, but in order to get to it you have to put in your time in another not-so-dream role. Or, perhaps you can’t afford to pursue it just yet for financial or personal reasons, so you’ve landed something that- for the time being- allows you flexibility and a stable income. My point isn’t just that sometimes it’s OK to settle for a role when it’s beneficial for you, but also that these jobs are just as important as those dream-worthy ones you’ll have down the road. These stepping stone roles will be the ones that shape who you are and who you’ll become. They’re the jobs that will give you the confidence and skills you need to ultimately have a successful career. So, I’ll leave you with this one tip: If your current job is your stepping stone, make the most of it while you can. That may mean using your robust company network to build long-lasting connections, or attending trainings or conferences your company provides, or taking on challenging projects to build skills in other areas. Remember, the goal is that you won’t be doing what you’re doing forever- so make decisions now that you know will have a positive impact later on. Because, like my friend, you might one day stop passively job searching and actually take a step toward your next move. “Future you” will be grateful you didn’t waste any of the opportunities you were given.

Professional Manager vs. Entrepreneurial Manager

Professional Manager vs. Entrepreneurial Manager Professional Manager vs. Entrepreneurial Manager An entrepreneur has a dream. Skill, hard work, and luck turn that dream into a business success. At some point, as the company grows and matures, the founder faces a decision - should he/she continue to manage the company or stay with the dream. Should the founder continue with entrepreneurial management or is it time to engage professional managers so the founder can devote more time to the companys core idea? It is a question that must continue to be faced as the company continues to grow. When to Accept Help from a Professional When is the right time for the founder to relinquish control of his/her dream to a professional? Some would have you believe it has to happen as soon as the founder begins to look for outside capital. Others would have you believe it is never the right time. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines an entrepreneur as one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise and manager as one that manages: as a) a person who conducts business or household affairs or b) a person whose work or profession is management. As you can see from those definitions, there is a lot of overlap between the two. Thats what makes the decision so hard. Many entrepreneurs are excellent managers. Often the founders decision to manage the company or manage the dream is a win in either case for the company. In many cases, the decision hinges on the founders definition of success. Does the founder want to grow the company into the biggest enterprise in its industry? Or would the founder rather limit growth to something that provides simply a good income and allows him/her to retain full control of the company and its goals and direction? A Personal Example of Professional Management Guiding an Entrepreneur A gentleman I know started a small software company based on his skill as a programmer. He has a real talent for programming languages, a good feel for what the market wants, and the resultant ability to produce specialty applications for select large companies. He also has a keen business sense, an excellent ability to market his companys capabilities, and has earned an enviable reputation for quality and innovation. He has built a network of contacts among the top levels of his biggest customers. He has been able to see new trends coming and has been agile enough to adjust to take advantage of them. As his company started to grow beyond the three guys in a garage stage, he found himself spending more time running the business than writing programs. So he hired a friend to manage the company so he could continue programming. He quickly learned that managing a growing company requires more skill than just friendship with the founder. He took the unpleasant, but necessary, step of eliminating the manager and resuming those duties. I met him several (no growth) years later. He was continuing to struggle with his dilemma of running the company or continuing to program. He was doing both, but was concerned that he just didnt have the time or energy to do both of them well. In under a year, I had helped him more than double the size of the company. It was a move that provided new possibilities at the same time as a watershed change in the industry provided new opportunities. He chose to retake full control of the business himself. A couple of years later, after turning the company to a dramatically new course, he again stepped aside and again brought in professional management. The company has been very successful in their new market. And the founder again may find himself facing the decision of how much control he is willing to sacrifice to continue to grow. Will this be the time he surrenders majority control of the voting stock in exchange for a top-caliber management team? Or will he decide that his current reward from the company is adequate for his needs? A Tough Choice to Make It is tough for any entrepreneur to decide when, or whether, to relinquish control of their dream for the growth and freedom a professional management team can bring to their company.

How a Job Search Is like Running 100 Miles

How a Job Search Is like Running 100 Miles How a Job Search Is like Running 100 Miles Thinking about the similarities between a job search and an ultra-marathon led to interview elite ultra-marathoner Darcy Piceu. An accomplished, record-setting distance runner, Piceu is also a running coach and a high school intervention specialist- and a mom to boot! Her 13 years of experience as an ultra-distance runner have taught Piceu a thing or three about the importance of pacing in reaching long-range goals. Ultra-marathon runners train for endurance races that are typically 100 miles or more. We talked to Piceu about her inspiring running career (she set a women’s record for running the grueling-but-exhilarating  Grand Canyon Rim2Rim2Rim) and about how her training tips might translate from the running trail to the job-seeking trail. Heres how to run your job search like an ultra-marathoner: Focus on quality. Unlike some ultra-marathoners, Piceus training schedule is more about quality than quantity, she says. It seems counter-intuitive: wouldnt someone training for a 100-mile race want to rack up the daily training miles? Not necessarily, Piceu says. Thanks to her years of experience, shes built a training base that allows her to focus on the quality of her runs, and not the total mile tally. I have so many other things going on in my life, I think thats a good thing, actually, she says. Quality in your job search: Job seekers, target your job search energies toward work that would be meaningful to you. Tailor your resume and cover letter to each specific position, and home in on the kinds of jobs that feel like a good fit. Set long-range goals. Setbacks are inevitable- in racing, in your job search, in life. How to handle those setbacks? On the running trail, Piceu works on training her mind as much as she trains her body. Your mind in those distances can go into a funk, she says. Its important not to follow that negativity down a road to where you basically just want to stop. Instead, Darcy advises, push through. Just like in life, we have highs and lows, she says.Oftentimes, neither stays. Everything is changing at all times. Goals in your job search:  Learn to take rejection in stride. A no from a potential employer today has no bearing on how things might go with another employer tomorrow. Be present. The benefits that Darcy gets from running spill over into all aspects of her life. The metaphors that come up for me are endless, she says. My biggest one is being in the moment. Running 100 miles is a constant reminder that you just put one foot in front of the other and deal with whatever comes at that moment. Darcy uses meditation techniques and yoga to help her stay grounded, literally and figuratively, and hit her targets. Being present in your job search:  Distractions and moments of doubt are inevitable in your job search. Dont look back, and try not to anticipate what might happen next. Have a blueprint, stick to it, and dont hesitate to reboot your job search plan, if necessary. Trust your community. In distance running, athletes often form bonds based on their common experiences, Piceu notes. Theres a connection you end up having with other runners. You know theres a lot of suffering involved, just like in life, Darcy says. Its a shared experience that strips everything away. It strips the ego away. That sense of community buoys fellow runners and keeps them on track, even through the tough moments. Trust in your job search: Network, network, network. Community comes in many forms, so when it comes to your job search, build on the professional network you already have going, and look for ways to grow it. Stay flexible. As if juggling motherhood, coaching other runners, and working as a high school intervention specialist werent enough, Piceu makes time to run. She finds it helpful that her part-time work in her high school position allows time for the other things that matter in her life- especially spending quality time with her daughter. Flexibility in your job search: Seek flexibility in your job options as well as in your day-to-day life. Specifically (as far as your job search is concerned), do your research to help you find the best companies for work flexibility. Follow Darcy on Twitter!

Air Force Maintenance Management Analysis (2R0X1)

Air Force Maintenance Management Analysis (2R0X1) Air Force Maintenance Management Analysis (2R0X1) In the Air Force, its up to maintenance management analysts to oversee costs and efficiencies associated with missions and operations. It may not sound like the most thrilling job in the Armed Forces, but these airmen keep track of budgets and schedules, so not much would be able to happen without their expertise.   The Air Force categorizes this job with code  2R0X1. Duties of Air Force Maintenance Management Analysts These airmen monitor, collect and audit information used in reports and briefings. They initiate special studies and investigations and perform statistical analyses, and report findings to superior officers, with their recommendations.   Its up to maintenance management analysts to inform their managers of any significant factors that may affect a mission. Theyre also tasked with collecting and evaluating mission information systems (MIS) and related data. From time to time, they may audit MIS source data for accuracy and compliance.   These airmen also interpret data for trends and deviations and make recommendations for corrective action. They analyze deficiencies in areas such as equipment performance, materiel consumption, scheduling, management, and resources, and the results of any corrective actions that may need to be taken. And they prepare written reports and special studies, presenting recommendations and briefings to senior managers. Qualifying as a Maintenance Management Analyst A composite score of 55 on the general (G) Air Force Qualification Area of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests is required for this job.   Airmen in this job must be U.S. citizens and as with most Air Force jobs, normal color vision is required.   Since those who serve in this job handle potentially sensitive information about Air Force missions, a secret security clearance, which involves a background check of character and finances, is required. A history of drug or alcohol abuse may be disqualifying for this clearance. Training for Air Force Maintenance Management Analysts After 7 weeks of basic training and Airmens Week, airmen assigned to this role will spend 56 days in technical school training at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. They will learn about maintenance and operations organization management and the specific procedures concerning aircraft, missiles, communications-electronics, and space systems. Theyll also learn applied statistical, analytical data systems design procedures, and concepts and application of directives. Ideally, airmen in this role will be computer literate and will have completed high school with courses in algebra, English composition, and writing.   Civilian Careers Similar to Air Force Maintenance Management Analysts Although much of what they do is specific to the Air Force, these airmen are qualified for a variety of non-military jobs. The training they receive will prepare them for work as project managers across much of the private sector. Theyll also be suited to pursue careers as accountants, but this requires additional training and licensure depending where they live.   Airmen in this role will likely be able to find civilian work as managers or site foremen, overseeing large projects and keeping track of materials, personnel, and budgets.

The Skills Needed to Communicate â€" Leader who possess this ability are excellent writers and communicators. They have the ability to communicate down or up their organizational ladders. Without it, success and effectiveness are impossible to sustain. It’s up to each individual to examine and close their own professional gaps. Start by being honest. Realize that you are where you are largely because of your education, experience, and abilities. Are you the type of person to take charge or sit on the sidelines? Do you wait for the order to charge, or can you gauge the battle and make preparations well ahead of time? Are your business instincts sharp or dull? Do you have what it takes to elicit buy-in from others? Business acumen helps create a complete business professional  who is ready and prepared to take on the world.

How to Stand Out at a Career Fair

How to Stand Out at a Career Fair How to Stand Out at a Career Fair Career fairs are incredible opportunities for candidates. Dozens of companies gather in one place, offering the chance to explore more jobs and internships in one day than a job seeker might get in a month of submitting resumes online. Many employers even conduct on-the-spot interviews, which means candidates dont have to wait weeks or months after submitting an application to actually speak to the employer. Additionally, career fairs are great networking opportunities. Even if a candidate isnt interested in a position with a certain company at the time of the fair, the connection is there to be leveraged in the future. However, because career fairs offer so much, theyre often swamped with candidates. It may seem impossible to stand out when theres such a large crowd, but youll do great if you follow a few simple guidelines: Plan Ahead According to one study, 47 percent of candidates are eliminated from the running because they have little or no knowledge of the company with which they are interviewing. As a professional and qualified candidate, you should never go into a career fair blind. Find out in advance what companies are going to be at the fair. Have an idea beforehand of the ones with which youd like to connect,  and know exactly which positions you want to discuss. Wandering around looking for something that seems interesting is a waste of both your time and the recruiters time. After youve researched the companies youre interested in, create a game plan to tackle them all. Decide in advance which booths to visit first and where you should head if the lines are getting long. Remember that time is limited at a career fair, so standing in lines should be avoided whenever possible. You can always move on to the next booth on the list and come back later. Look the Part A career fair is basically a series of short, personal interviews, and what you wear in an interview matters: 65 percent of respondents to a survey  said clothes could be a deciding factor between two practically identical candidates. When attending a career fair, dress like you would for any other formal interview  â€" but make sure youre wearing fairly comfortable clothing. Heels or a stiff suit might be okay for a sit-down interview, but career fairs involve a lot of walking and standing. In addition, dont bring much more than your resume with you. A small bag for essentials works fine, but you dont want to be encumbered by a coat, briefcase, or anything else that might get in the way of handshakes and business cards. Sell Yourself The  brief interviews you have at career fairs are not the same as formal, sit-down interviews. The recruiter probably wont ask a series of questions to find out more about you.  Instead, youll need to use the interview to sell yourself. Before the big day arrives, practice talking about yourself to friends, colleagues, or even in front of the mirror. You should discuss your interests, your qualifications, and anything else thats relevant to the position. In addition to what you say, make sure youre taking note of how you say it.
